Hearts Of Steel is the 19th episode of Season 5 in the original version of MacGyver.

Summary[]

While shopping at a mall, Lisa Woodman and her friend Ingrid are abducted by men who identify Lisa by her coat. However, since Lisa loaned her coat to Ingrid, they leave Lisa locked in a mall storage room and take Ingrid with them instead. They send a package containing Lisa's coat and a note directing Lisa's industrialist father Eric to expect a phone call and not to contact police. Eric calls MacGyver for help. At MacGyver's advice, Eric calls in the police, and they set up a phone trace.

Meanwhile, a mall maintenance worker frees Lisa. She returns home and provides a description of one of the kidnappers. When the kidnappers call, Eric doesn't let on that they have the wrong girl, but they use a voice modifier and hang up before the police can finish the trace, demanding three million dollars ransom.

When Eric shows up at the appointed site for the exchange, there is a note with Ingrid's location, but no sign of the kidnappers. Ingrid passes on to Eric a message implying that the kidnappers now have Lisa. He races back to the house to find Lisa's police guards and Ingrid's mother (who is also Eric's maid) are all tied up, and Lisa is gone.

Lisa's description, a fingerprint left on her hat when Ingrid was abducted, some steel filings, and comments from the kidnappers hinting at a personal grudge lead MacGyver and the police to Travers, a former steel mill owner with a police record of multiple assaults during a strike years prior. Eric had Travers's steel mill shut down, explaining the grudge.

MacGyver heads to the abandoned steel mill to rescue Lisa, but Eric is so upset by Lisa being kidnapped under police watch that he resolves to do whatever the kidnappers ask, even after Travers calls again and raises the ransom to five million dollars. MacGyver stealthily takes out two of the kidnappers, both disgruntled former employees at the steel mill, leaving only Travers, but Eric shows up before he can get the key to Lisa's room. Travers takes Lisa out of her room and meets with Eric. After confirming that Eric has brought the ransom, Travers announces his intention to kill Lisa, Eric, and MacGyver anyway, thereby completing his revenge and eliminating all witnesses. MacGyver talks him down by having Eric promise to restore the steel mill to full operation, and Travers surrenders instead.

Eric tries to renege on his promise, pointing out that it was made under duress, but Lisa badgers him into doing as he said he would.
