Sean Angus Malloy, who goes by the nickname Sam (formed from his initials), is introduced in the series finale as Angus MacGyver's son with a past love named Kate Malloy. Sean's middle name is a dedication by his mother to his father. Though his profession is photojournalism, he shares his father's globetrotting lifestyle and penchant for getting out of tight spots and jury-rigging useful devices from at hand objects.
Sam's mother was murdered in front of him when he was nine years old, during a trip to China. She never told MacGyver about Sam, believing that he was not ready to settle down and raise a son, and though she often spoke to Sam about his father, she did not tell him his name or where to find him. Sam was thus left effectively an orphan. He made his way back to America on his own, and since he had no surviving relatives on his mother's side, was raised by his mother's friends from age 9 to age 18.
