A Virgin Islands casino owner steals $60 million in diamonds. MacGyver and an American senator's daughter plot to steal them back from the casino's impregnable vault.

SummaryEdit

Act OneEdit

A plane lands on a runway located in the Virgin Islands. A frazzled looking man named Daniel Sims is helped out of the plane by two soldiers who lead him into a small hangar, where they are met by Catlin. Sims is worried about being followed out of the United States while Catlin inspects the $60 million in diamonds that Sims has brought with him. While they discuss the terms of the operation, Catlin turns and fires a gun at Sims, shooting him in the eye. (We don't see this, but we do see Sims' glasses with a clean bullethole through one of the lenses hitting the floor.)

In Washington, D.C., MacGyver is sitting with Senator Rhodes, and learns that Sims had stolen the aforementioned diamonds from a campaign the Senator and his daughter Chris were funding to help more unfortunate people in Africa. MacGyver also learns that the Senator's daughter has left her work in Africa to travel to the Virgin Islands to try and track down Catlin and the diamonds, and MacGyver readily joins the hunt.

MacGyver is greeted at the airport by Chris Rhodes, who is holding up a "MacGyver" sign. He learns from Chris that Catlin is an ex-mercenary who arrived in the Virgin Islands five years ago, purchasing a large hotel-casino complex. As MacGyver and Rhodes walk around the outside of the large complex, they come across Catlin demonstrating his martial arts skills by the pool. He makes short work of several opponents, then speaks to an elegantly dressed woman about the diamonds. On the other side of the pool, MacGyver informs Rhodes that he'll simply have to go in to the complex and take the diamonds back.

Back in Rhodes' lodgings, MacGyver is snacking on an apple as Rhodes paces the room, trying to decide whether or not stealing the diamonds is a good idea. She finally agrees, but wants to help MacGyver in the operation. MacGyver is hesitant about this, and decides to begin by checking the casino's vault for the diamonds before moving on to Catlin's personal vault. To do this, MacGyver and Rhodes plan to go undercover into the casino, with MacGyver playing a high roller who plans to win at craps by cheating.

Act TwoEdit

Outside the main entrance of the casino, MacGyver, looking like a James Bond with a persistant cowlick, departs company with Rhodes, who is also dressed to the nines and waits at a counter. MacGyver goes into the casino and, using the distraction caused by two women arguing, rigs a 'hook', fashioned of string and a paperclip bent in the shape of a hook, and attaches it to the zipper of the dress of one of the two arguing women. He quickly apologizes for bumping into her, but steps on the other end of the string as well. As she walks away, the dress unzips and falls to the floor, causing an even bigger commotion, during which MacGyver palms the dice from the craps table.

MacGyver takes the dice into the Men's bathroom, where he uses a handful of powdered soap and a shoe shiner plugged into the wall to shave the dice down. He then returns to the casino, where he throws what seems to be an amazing string of sevens, creating a winning streak the likes of which the crooked casino never sees, drawing Catlin's attention. MacGyver receives his virgin Bloody Mary at the craps table while an angry and suspicious Catlin sends the woman from earlier over to MacGyver to find out exactly who he is.

When the woman introduces herself as Tiffany, MacGyver introduces himself as James Bond. Catlin approaches the table as MacGyver makes a bet over the house limit, and tells the table operator to let it ride. MacGyver throws another seven, while pulling a straight pair of dice out of his right pants pocket. MacGyver makes the switch while Catlin taunts him into going again for a total of $130,000, but MacGyver declines, and having made the switch, throws the clean pair of dice onto the table, which Catlin quickly takes as he closes the table. Unseen, MacGyver deposits the shaved pair of dice into his barely sipped drink.

MacGyver asks Catlin if he can store his winnings in the casino vault, and Catlin oblidges. The vault is small, with no room for two hundred pounds of diamonds. Catlin leads MacGyver back to the craps table, where it is revealed that they have found the second pair of dice. Catlin has his men lead MacGyver to a private room, but Rhodes dives in front of them, knocking the men over, and giving MacGyver a chance to escape. He runs through the back corridors and inner workings of the casino, closely followed by Catlin, his men, and a number of guards. He uses a power cord to tie closed a set of swinging doors, but soon finds himself dodging gunfire anyway.

Taking refuge behind a small bartending stand, MacGyver takes one cannister of compressed gas (almost certainly carbon dioxide) and uses it to smash off the valves of the other three cannisters that are stored on the bottom shelf of the stand. The sudden gas discharge pushes the stand at a high velocity into his pursuers, allowing him to escape. Outside, MacGyver meets up with Rhodes and her motorcycle, and they exit the area quickly.

In the morning, Rhodes has to rouse a sleepy, shirtless MacGyver, and they begin to plan their assault on Catlin's personal suite and vault. Rhodes has learned that there is a spy camera and alarm system guarding the suite, but MacGyver isn't phased. Instead, he informs Rhodes that she'll be starting a riot in the casino in order for him to gain access to the diamonds.

Act ThreeEdit

Back in Rhodes' room, MacGyver disassembles the handset of a phone, removing the magnet from it and placing it in Rhodes' shoe, instructing her to make sure to keep her foot as close to the roulette wheel as possible. He also removes the stone from one of Rhodes' rings and straightens the prongs that had held it in place. Putting the ring back on Rhodes' finger with the prongs facing in, MacGyver shows her how to use the prongs to mark cards while playing blackjack, in order to accuse the house of cheating. They then go over the plan one final time: Rhodes must cause disturbances at the blackjack table, roulette wheel and slot machines, creating a riot scene at 2:10 sharp.

They arrive at the casino in separate vehicles, MacGyver driving a red MG convertible and Rhodes driving a grey Volvo. MacGyver, dressed in a worker's jumpsuit, removes the bottom of the downpipe of a nearby gutter and walks off, while Rhodes enters the casino. MacGyver approaches the door to the Electrical Panel Room and picks the lock using a long, thin, metal tool. Leaning the downpipe against the wall, MacGyver uses a small wind up clock, some wiring, and his Swiss Army knife to rig the electrical system to shut off at precisely 2:10. He does this by attaching a wire to each hand of the clock, such that when the two hands meet at 2:10, the wires touching each other will short out the system.

Inside the casino, Rhodes is standing near a slot machine boasting the "World's Largest Jackpot" with a small round compact in hand. As a man approaces, she places the compact behind the machine and walks away. Back in the Electric Panel Room, MacGyver uses a bent wire clothes hanger, a small round mirror, some duct tape, and a piece of string to create a device to neutralize the security cameras. In the casino, Rhodes glances at her watch and the time is 1:30.

MacGyver emerges from a room labeled Utilities. He watches as Catlin leaves his suite, and watches the spy camera in action. He slides along the wall and stands directly beneath the camera, where it cannot see him. He hooks the wire hanger over the camera, such that the mirror is completely blocking the camera's view. Elsewhere, in a control room, a security guard notices this and sends a man to investigate. Holding the string attached to the mirror device in his teeth, MacGyver works on picking the lock to the suite.

In the casino, Rhodes is sitting in the seat closest to the roulette wheel as Catlin approaches her. Upstairs, MacGyver opens the lock and uses the string to pull the mirror device into the suite just before the guard exits the elevator and enters the hallway. In the casino, Rhodes wins her bet on the wheel as in the suite, MacGyver examines his surroundings. Taking an ashtray, MacGyver uses the ash to see beams from the optical sensors guarding the entrance the suite. Putting the ashtray down, MacGyver approaches a decorative color-changing, fiber optic, Koosh-like object. He removes one of the bundles of fiber optic wires connecting the object, and uses it to connect the two beams, lighting up the bundle. He then bends it such that he is able to maneuver himself through the doorway safely.

Now inside the suite, MacGyver locates the vault, only to find it has a complicated looking lock mechanism. The door opens easily, but behind it is a second, thick metal door. Downstairs in the casino, Rhodes is still playing roulette, with Catlin standing over her shoulder. In the control room, the guards see evidence of an intruder in the suite, and go to inform Catlin, who leaves the casino straightaway. In the suite, Catlin and his men search for the cause of the intruder alarm, only to find that Catlin's pet bird had escaped its cage (thanks to MacGyver). Caitlin puts the bird back in its cage and deides to check on the vault, using a small device to trigger a series of four tones, unlocking the vault.

As Catlin and his men exit the suite thinking it is secure, MacGyver emerges from a nearby closet and grabs four crystal wine goblets. MacGyver pours varying amounts of wine into each goblet, and licking his finger, rubs it around the rim of the goblet to produce a tone, trying to find the four tones used by Catlin. In the casino, Rhodes uses her magnetic shoe to trip the roulette wheel, causing a man to think he'd been cheated. As he angrily jumps up from the table, she calmly walks away. Upstairs in the suite, MacGyver has three of the tones correct, but must take a sip of wine from the final goblet to obtain the fourth tone. He does this with a grimace on his face, and then gains access to the vault.

MacGyver springs into action, grabbing one bag of diamonds after another. He takes apart a decorative lamp, removing a piece shaped somewhat like a spoonrest with funneling potential, and then opens the window and removes another piece of downpipe. In the casino, Rhodes uses her modified ring to mark a card at the blackjack table and with help from another patron, rasies allegations of the house cheating. Back upstairs, MacGyver uses one bag of diamonds and the piece of lamp to create a chute leading to the downpipe. In the casino, a man resisting casino guards knocks over the roulette wheel, and in a few moments, a brawl breaks out as the lights begin to flicker and the slot machine Rhodes had been at earlier begins to flood the room with coins. Upstairs, MacGyver begins to empty the bags of diamonds into the downpipe as Rhodes hurriedly exits the casino.

Act FourEdit

Outside where the two cars are parked, Rhodes arrives just in time to attach an extra piece to the downpipe, connecting the flow of diamonds with the trunk of the MG. Catlin and his men leave the chaotic casino in search of Rhodes as MacGyver pours the last of the diamonds from the window. Rhodes closes the trunk of the MG and takes off in the Volvo, only to find Catlin and four of his men right in front of her. She plows right through them, only to be blocked by on oncoming car. Meanwhile, MacGyver gets into the MG and drives off in the other direction, as Catlin and his men take Rhodes hostage.

Back in the room, MacGyver gets a phone call from Catlin, who demands that MacGyver bring the diamonds to a small park near the breakwater. As MacGyver approaches the park, he stops to pick up Tiffany, who pulls a gun on him once in the passenger seat. She directs him to a small airstrip, where he is reunited with Rhodes in the cargo bay of a small aircraft as Catlin's men back the MG up into a space as well, where Catlin confirms that the diamonds are still in the trunk. As Catlin tries to lead MacGyver and Rhodes to the cockpit, MacGyver reminds Rhodes of her modified ring and she scratches Catlin in the face. MacGyver shoves Catlin into the cockpit and using the jack from the trunk of the MG, barricades the door.

As the plane takes off, Catlin instructs the pilot to go to 30,000 feet, where the lack of oxygen would be lethal. Without seeing its construction, MacGyver has attached a large parachute to the MG. He straps on a helmet and Rhodes ducks under the passenger seat as MacGyver drives out of the plane, floating away to safety. As they float down, MacGyver receives the obligatory thank you kiss from Rhodes.

Memorable QuotesEdit

Rhodes: How can you be so sure you'll win?
MacGyver: I'll Cheat

MacGyverismsEdit

A complete list of problems solved by MacGyver is also available.
  • A two-part MacGyverism: First, MacGyver goes into the casino and, using the distraction caused by two women arguing, rigs a 'hook', fashioned of string and a paperclip bent in the shape of a hook, and attaches it to the zipper of the dress of one of the two arguing women. He quickly apologizes for bumping into her, but steps on the other end of the string as well. As she walks away, the dress unzips and falls to the floor, causing an even bigger commotion, during which MacGyver palms the dice from the craps table.
  • Then, MacGyver takes the dice into the Men's bathroom, where he uses a handful of powdered soap and a shoe shiner plugged into the wall to shave the dice down. He then returns to the casino, where he throws what seems to be an amazing string of sevens, creating a winning streak the likes of which the crooked casino never sees. He switches the dice for stright ones when he's done and depostits the shaved dice in his drink, where they are later found.
  • Taking refuge behind a small bartending stand, MacGyver takes one cannister of compressed gas (almost certainly carbon dioxide) and uses it to smash off the valves of the other three cannisters that are stored on the bottom shelf of the stand. The sudden gas discharge pushes the stand at a high velocity into his pursuers, allowing him to escape.
  • MacGyver disassembles the handset of a phone, removing the magnet from it and placing it in Rhodes' shoe, allowing her to later control the roulette wheel with her foot.
  • MacGyver removes the stone from one of Rhodes' rings and straightens the prongs that had held it in place. Putting the ring back on Rhodes' finger with the prongs facing in, MacGyver shows her how to use the prongs to mark cards while playing blackjack, in order to accuse the house of cheating. She also uses the ring later on to scratch Catlin on the plane.
  • MacGyver uses a small wind up clock, some wiring, and his Swiss Army knife to rig the electrical system to shut off at precisely 2:10. He does this by attaching a wire to each hand of the clock, such that when the two hands meet at 2:10, the wires touching each other will short out the system.
  • Inside the casino, Rhodes is standing near a slot machine boasting the "World's Largest Jackpot" with a small round compact in hand. As a man approaces, she places the compact behind the machine and walks away. Later, when the power goes out, this machine spits out large quantities of coins. It is unclear how or even if this was because of the compact, as well as unclear as to if she even put it there in the first place. During the casino riot, Catlin believes the machine's actions have something to do with her.
  • Back in the Electric Panel Room, MacGyver uses a bent wire clothes hanger, a small round mirror, some duct tape, and a piece of string to create a device to neutralize the security cameras by hooking the wire hanger over the camera, such that the mirror is completely blocking the camera's view. As MacGyver opens the lock to the suite, he uses the string to pull the mirror device into the suite just before an oncoming guard exits the elevator and enters the hallway.
  • Taking an ashtray, MacGyver uses the ash to see beams from the optical sensors guarding the entrance the suite.
  • MacGyver pours varying amounts of wine into four goblets, and using the tip of his finger, produces tones from the rims of the goblets, reproducing the four tones needed to imitate the device that Catlin used to open the vault.
  • MacGyver takes apart a decorative lamp, removing a piece shaped somewhat like a spoonrest with funneling potential, and then opens the window and removes another piece of downpipe, allowing himself to pour the diamonds into the downpipe to the waiting convertible.
  • Without seeing its construction, MacGyver has attached a large parachute to the MG. He straps on a helmet and Rhodes ducks under the passenger seat as MacGyver drives out of the plane, floating away to safety.

Notes and TriviaEdit

  • This is the first episode in the series not to feature an opening gambit.
  • MacGyver is compared to, and later introduces himself as, James Bond when wearing a tuxedo.
  • In the finale MacGyver parachutes out of the back of a plane in a MG. James Bond pulls off the same feat in Die Another Day.
  • The footage of the MG dropping out of the airplane was from a MG Car Co. advertising campaign. On the first drop the parachute did not work and the MG pancaked into the ground. On the second drop, the parachute worked but the oil pan was broken.

BloopersEdit

  • In the first scene of this episode, Catlin shoots Sims in the eye through his glasses. The glasses fall to the floor, showing a perfect hole in one lens, but strangely there was no blood (perhaps to make the show seem less violent).
  • When MacGyver enters the vault in Catlin's suite, the wire that opens the safe's door is visible.
  • When MacGyver drives the MG with an attached parachute out of the airplane at the end of the episode, you can see a cameraman jump out after the car. A camera is also visible in the passenger seat. When the parachute opens, a cable is visible holding it up.
  • The airplane is shown taking off with its cargo ramp closed. Neither MacGyver nor his companion are shown opening it.
  • When Macgyver is removing the magnet from the phone, he unscrews the reciever, takes it out, walks over to Chris and gives it to her, then comes back and places the magically fixed receiver right back on the hook. Template:Mac
